No B&B from me today. On Thursday morning, I made the very difficult decision to let Ippie cross the rainbow bridge, and we’ll be heading to the vet this afternoon. Since 2008, she has been the best little familiar, helping me navigate professional, personal, and geographic changes.
Born in Long Beach, Ippie Hernandez-Milagrosa aka Ippie the Tech Wizard Kitten came to my door begging for food one hot July night while I was trying to jailbreak an iPhone. The jailbreak process finally started working once she showed up, and she came back the next night, so I took her in and named her Ippie for the iPhone. (She even has an origin story, sung to the tune of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”)
In May of 2010, Ippie made the move to Sacramento, and grieved with me over the loss of Mossimo Crane the Pimptastic Cat later that year. When I adopted Rooney Jackson in November 2011, she became a somewhat reluctant big sister, alternating between patient tolerance and open hostility. Her favorite activities included making yummy sounds at the hummingbirds visiting our feeder and staring at nightly raccoon visitors. She made friends with many creative types who visited our home and cared for her and Rooney while I was away.
Eight years ago this week, we drove nearly 3,000 miles to Maryland, the three of us howling together through the Bonneville Salt Flats, Colorado forests, and the Kansas plains. During the pandammit, Ippie mastered hunting in our Baltimore apartment as well as video conferencing. In 2022, Ippie got to enjoy suburban life and bird watching and made a new friend in HM and his friends and family.
She flirted shamelessly with dogs and people, loved long naps with her favorite humans, gave the sweetest little nose licks, punked people for bites of their chicken or pizza, sang the grey kitty blues at all hours, and snuggled under blankets with abandon.
I will miss this sweet, silly, carb-loving, fluffy princess.
My condolences on your loss. I'll be sending good thoughts your way. Thank you for sharing Ippie's story, I'm glad you had the time with her that you did.
Sending hugs during this most difficult day… Brag for the week - we finally got a new ceiling fan installed in the bedroom - after almost a year with a broken one.
