Support Momcat's childhood library now through July 3
During spring break, I went to Michigan to place the headstone on Momcat’s grave. Afterwards I visited the local library—she had been an avid reader as a child and claimed to have read every book there. The tiny library Momcat visited as a child is long gone, but the new location is 750 square feet—probably just as small as the one she frequented. I finally believe her about reading every book!
I couldn’t hold back the tears as I talked to Tammy, the head librarian, about donating in Momcat’s memory. Placing the stone on her grave after nearly 17 years broke loose all my grief once again. Tammy was very kind and patient with me, and she passed along my contact info to the person in charge of donations and fundraising for the library.
In 2027 the Napoleon Library will undergo a refresh, with new paint, service desk, storage, and shelving changes. I’m hoping that through donations from Momcat’s family and friends, we can make a significant contribution to this work.
While I was talking with Tammy, I saw several moms with kids come in to pick out books. Seeing the kids get so excited to be there was so reminiscent of visiting libraries with Momcat. I would not be a writer nor a reader if it hadn’t been for Momcat’s influence. Supporting the library that raised her gives me a lot of joy. I wish I’d thought of it sooner.
